Role of Cholesterol in Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)

Introduction:

Coronary artery bypass grafting is a procedure that is performed on patients with coronary heart diseases. Heart Diseases are one of the leading causes of death for all people across the globe. Coronary heart diseases are caused by the build-up of an oily and sticky substance called plaque in the main arteries that carry oxygenated blood to the heart. There can be various causes for the build-up of plaque in the arteries but one of the most common reasons for the coronary heart disease is attributed to the unhealthy eating habits among the new generation today, with increasingly higher intake of junk food, fast food and oily food that has very high content of oil and cholesterol in them, which can be extremely harmful and can lead to obesity, kidney failure and heart diseases to name a few. The global Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Market is expected to grow significantly during the forecast period owing to increasing geriatric population having high risk of acquiring cardiovascular disorders like myocardial infarction, and coronary artery disease and accessibility of technologically advanced products like Anastomosis Assist Devices (AAD) and Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass (MIDCAB) is estimated to lucratively drive the growth of this market industry.

Role of Cholesterol:

The human body can split the cholesterol into two different components which is HDL and LDL cholesterol. HDL cholesterol is referred to as the good cholesterol and is required by the human body to carry out the basic daily functions. LDL cholesterol is often referred to as bad cholesterol and it is one of the reason for all problems with regards to heart ailments and obesity. Though the human body can absorb some amount of LDL cholesterol however, with long term exposure, the excess LDL cholesterol gets stored in different parts of the human body and can create blockages. This is the plaque that gets built up in the artery and can restrict the blood flow from and two the heart.

Bypass Surgery:

The procedure is a long surgery and can take up to five hours or more depending on the number of blockages that a person has in his heart. It is performed by a graft procedure wherein a part of the vein from the thigh of a person is taken out surgically and used to remove the blockages in the heart. The symptoms may occur but the problem can lie dormant for a period of 10- 15 years. However, if the symptoms are ignored, then it can lead to a very severe situation that is beyond any scope of treatment. A bypass surgery can bring back normalcy into a person’s life, can improve the pumping function of the heart, and can help the patient to become more active than what they were before the surgery.

Conclusion:

The coronary artery bypass surgery is one of the most advanced and complex surgeries to be performed with a very high rate of risk as well.However, if the procedure is performed properly, it can improve the quality of life of the patient.
