Several Implications of using Pacemaker

Published Date : 2017-07-19

A Pacemaker is a gadget small in size which is fixed in the abdomen or chest that helps in controlling heart rhythms that are abnormal. They are extremely helpful in treating Arrhythmias which is an issue related with the rhythm of the heartbeat or the rate. In Arrhythmias the heart rate may be rapid, irregular or extremely slow due to which the heart is unable to pump sufficient blood to the body. This causes fainting, shortness of breath and tiredness and can harm essential organs of the body which can lead to death. Certain symptoms of Arrhythmias can be alleviated by the use of the pacemaker and it can also provide normal lifestyles to people who are suffering from abnormal rhythms of the heart.

Significance of Using a Pacemaker

As Arrhythmias is a result of imprecise electrical signaling, electric pulses that are low in energy are used by pacemakers to make these signals precise. Functions of the pacemaker:

  • Equalize the electric signals between the primary and secondary chambers of the heart.
  • Hasten heart rhythm that is slow.
  • Managing heart rhythm that is abnormal or fast.
  • Controlling atrial fibrillation which is a condition caused if the ventricles abnormally contract the atria rather than beating with a rhythm that is abnormal.
  • Balancing the electric signals in the ventricles. When pacemakers control signals in the ventricles they are called cardiac resynchronization therapy devices as these are certified in treating heart failures.
  • Avoid deadly arrhythmia which is a result of a disorder known as long QT syndrome.

The electric activity and the rhythm of the heart can be controlled by the use of pacemakers. Advanced pacemaker can check rate of breathing, the temperature of the blood and various factors. Pacemakers can be fixed for limited time as well as stable. The ones that are temporarily fixed help in treating problems of the heart that last for a short period of time for example slow beating of the heart which is the result of a surgery of the heart, heart attack or a surplus dose of medication.

Short-times pacemakers can also be helpful in emergencies. If a patient has a pacemaker fixed that is temporary they are advised to stay in the hospital until the device has to be removed. Pacemakers that have to be fixed for a long time are not removed until a condition that is short-termed banishes.

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator is another gadget used by the doctors to cure arrhythmia which is extremely helpful in arrhythmia which can be deadly by using pulses that higher in energy besides the ones that are used for pulses that low. An Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator is identical to a pacemaker.
