Introduction:

Orthopaedic is that branch of surgery that is concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Various surgical and non-surgical methods are used to cure the trauma of spinal diseases, injuries from sports, degenerative disorders, a hoard of infections, Spinal and skeletal tumours, and congenital diseases as well.

Originally, the term orthopaedic enjoyed a very conventional meaning which involved the treatment of any bone or skeletal system related injuries. However, this has been proved wrong and research has proved Orthopaedics have a much wider scope than what was actually thought of it be.The designing of the devices that are used in the treatment and management of orthoses is known as orthotics.

In simple words, orthosis is basically a device that is designed to change and modify the basic characteristics of the skeletal and the muscular system. The professional who is involved in the designing and application of such kind of devices is known as an orthotist. Orthosis may be used to immobilize an extremity, joint or body segment for a particular reason.

Orthotics is a mix of knowledge across various fields such as anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, biomechanics and engineering.

Market for Orthoses:

North America has the highest market for Orthopaedic Orthotics market as it involves the maximum number of surgeries that are conducted and made with regards to this field. The Asian markets however with a smaller share than that of North America, is still one of the largest growing markets for this kind of equipment. The European markets are placed third when compared to the demand and the usage of these equipment’s. The industry as a whole is expected to garner maximum market share by the end of the forecast period. The compound annual growth rate for this industry is characterized to be quite substantial. The overall market for orthopaedic orthotics is divided into hospitals, over the counter exchange and finally, the end users.

Types of Orthoses

  1. Upper-limb orthoses

They are external devices generally positioned on the arms to overcome and improve the characteristics as well as the functions of the arm.

  1. Lower-limb orthoses

They are external devices generally applied to lower body segments to improve movement, reduce pain and increase flexibility throughout the body.

  1. Spinal orthoses

It is used when a condition is developed wherein the shape of the spinal cord is in a deformed mannerand is generally developed by females during puberty. These devices can also be used to treat spinal fractures.

Conclusion:

Orthotics are devices that have been developed in order to help people with severe sport injuries and disabilities overcome their weaknesses.
