Published Date : 2017-08-17

Ophthalmology refers to the branch of medicine that is associated with the physiology, diseases and anatomy of the eyeball and orbit. An ophthalmologist is known as a specialist in medical and surgical eye issues. Ophthalmologists are granted to treat the eye medically, perform surgeries that are incisional or implement laser therapy when required. Ophthalmic surgery, also termed ocular surgery is performed on the eye or on the adnexa of the eye only by an ophthalmologist. The eye requires extreme care prior to the surgery and after and during the surgery is being performed as it is a fragile organ of the body. A responsible and qualified expert eye surgeon is in charge of taking important precaution and selecting instruments for the surgery of the patient. Currently, eye surgery is carried out widely and has had various enhancements in order to treat numerous eye problems.  As the eye mostly contains nerves, it is extremely essential to give anesthesia before a surgery is being performed. The most common anesthesia that is used is the local anesthesia. For procedures that have to be quick topical anesthesia using lidocaine  is used commonly. The patient needs to cooperate while giving topical anesthesia, hence general anesthesia is useful for children and traumatic eye injuries.

Ophthalmic Viscosurgical Devices are extremely useful for the surgeries performed for eye problems. These devices are used to protect the cornea, the iris and other internal structures as the eye is the most fragile organ. These devices are essential in a list of things while the surgery is being performed such as helping to reduce free radicals, creating a protective barrier and easing in manipulation of tissues at the time of surgery. Various ophthalmologist make the use of ophthalmic viscosurgical devices for many procedures like retinal procedures, cataract removal, ocular trauma treatments, keratoplasty and glaucoma surgeries. The ophthalmic viscosurgical devices consists of a number of active ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC), Chondroitin Sulfate which is a type of polysaccharide  that is present in the blood vessels, tissues, cartilage and the cornea. Some of the most important surgical devices used in ophthalmology are:

•    Toric Marker- it is used for the purpose of marking 0 to 180 reference marks during the surgery for toric implant.

•    Speculum- is useful to keep the eyes open during the surgery.

•    Phoropter- used for refraction testing.

•    Pre-chopper- it is used to chop lens into pieces before implanting new lenses and curtail phaco time.

•    Contact lenses- are slightly invasive and are used to correct the refractive errors in the eye.

•    Tonometers- helpful in deciding the intraocular pressure.

•    Forceps- are useful for holding instruments and other objects.
